Loving Me, God’s Way: Share the Spoils: Spread Discovery

Have you ever considered that the greatest treasure hunt begins within? We often search for riches in the external world, chasing fleeting possessions and accolades. But Jesus reveals a profound truth: the key to loving others lies in first discovering and nurturing the treasure within ourselves. This journey of self-love isn't a selfish pursuit; it's the very foundation upon which genuine, outward-flowing love is built.

Imagine trying to share water from an empty well. You can’t. Similarly, if our own wells of self-care are dry, we cannot truly offer the life-giving water of love to those around us. Jesus’s command to “love your neighbor as yourself” (Matthew 22:39) isn't just a commandment; it's a map to this inner treasure. It illuminates the vital connection between self-love and our capacity to love others. It's about recognizing our own inherent worth, a worth bestowed upon us by our Creator.

This journey of self-discovery is about unearthing our God-given worth and tending to our physical, emotional, and spiritual needs. It’s about filling our own wells so that we have an abundance to share. When we do this, we not only discover our own treasure but also become beacons, guiding others to discover theirs. We become sharers of the spoils, spreading the joy of self-discovery and love.

So, how do we begin this treasure hunt? How do we start sharing the spoils?

  • Acts of Service: Sharing the Spoils: Look for opportunities to share your newfound abundance. Serve others in your community, church, or family. These acts of service are not just about giving; they are about sharing the treasure you’ve discovered within. It's about letting your light shine.
  • Practice Empathy: Seeing Through Another's Eyes: Step into the shoes of others. By understanding their perspectives, we develop deeper compassion and help them recognize the inherent value they possess. We help them see their own treasure.
  • Reflect on Your Capacity to Love: Checking the Well: Honestly assess how your self-care practices impact your ability to love. Are you giving from a place of overflow or depletion? This honest self-reflection is crucial for maintaining a healthy balance and ensuring we have something to share.

John 13:34-35: Jesus calls us to love one another as He loved us—a love that is sacrificial and overflowing. This kind of love requires a heart that is itself filled with love. We can't pour from an empty cup

Galatians 6:2: Bearing one another's burdens demands strength and compassion, resources we can only draw from a place of inner well-being. If we're constantly depleted, we'll struggle to support others effectively

1 John 4:20-21: This passage powerfully connects loving God with loving our neighbor. If we cannot love the brother or sister we see, how can we love the God we cannot see? This reinforces the idea that self-love is not self-indulgence; it's the very conduit through which God's love flows outward into the world.

Let us pray:

Jesus, you are the ultimate treasure. Teach us to love others with the same selfless love you have shown us. Help us to care for ourselves, not out of selfishness, but so that we can be vessels of your love, guiding others to discover the treasure within themselves. Amen.
