Matthew 22:37-39 NLT

“Jesus replied, “‘You must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. A second is equally important: ‘Love your neighbor as you do yourself.”

{love the lord with all the passion of your heart, all the energy of your being & w/ every thought that is within you; also going back to the definition of love 1 Corinthians 13:4-7 extend those qualities to yourself because the measure you are able to give love to yourself will be the EXTENT to which you will be able to practice and offer love to others }

Psalm 139:14 NLT

“Thank you for making me so wonderfully complex! Your workmanship is marvelous—how well I know it.”

‭‭

{recognizing how amazing we were created, our priceless worth and how cherished and prized the lord regards us as allows us an accurate view/lens to  look at ourselves and others through}

Genesis‬ ‭1‬:‭27‬-‭28‬ ‭MSG‬‬

“God created human beings; he created them godlike, Reflecting God’s nature. He created them male and female. God blessed them: “Prosper! Reproduce! Fill Earth! Take charge!””

‭‭

{we were created to REFLECT God’s NATURE, we were created BLESSED, we were created to PROSPER, REPRODUCE (not just children but reproduce/multiply/expand the qualities of God) & TAKE AUTHORITY}

‭‭Romans‬ ‭5‬:‭5‬ ‭GNT‬‬

“This hope does not disappoint us, for God has poured out his love into our hearts by means of the Holy Spirit, who is God's gift to us.”

{God’s gift to us the Holy Spirit helps us deepen our love of God which in turn helps us see and treat ourselves correctly and the overflow of that love is what we can and should offer to others so that the cycle continues our love for others sparks others to want to get to know God which in turn allows the Holy Spirit to help them deepen their love for God which helps them see and treat themselves correctly which will overflow to the next and so on and so on}

The Bible, though not using the modern term "self-love," overflows with wisdom on self-worth and care. The golden rule, "love your neighbor as yourself" (Matthew 22:37-39), emphasizes the importance of cherishing ourselves. Recognizing our inherent value as God's beloved creation, as Psalm 139:14 beautifully expresses, empowers us to live a life that glorifies Him.

While some may worry about excessive self-focus, the Bible encourages a balanced approach. It calls us to tend to our physical and spiritual well-being, knowing we are fearfully and wonderfully made (Psalm 139:14). This self-care, rooted in God's love, enables us to better serve others and fulfill our divine purpose.

The connection between self-love and God's love is a beautiful dance. By embracing our identity as God's cherished children, we cultivate a healthy self-worth that empowers us to love ourselves and others unconditionally. As we navigate life's journey, let's remember the profound truth of Genesis 1:27: "So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them." We are precious, unique, and worthy of love, both from ourselves and our Creator.

Jesus wisely began with the command to love God. True self-love and love for others flow from our love for God. As we delve into Scripture and connect with the Holy Spirit, our love for God deepens (Romans 5:5). This love inspires us to care for our spirit, soul, and body. For example, understanding the depth of God's love for us, as expressed through Jesus' sacrifice, compels us to forgive ourselves and others, leading to emotional and physical healing.

As I learned the importance of loving myself well to better love others, it became clear. When I'm rested and cared for, I'm more patient and loving. Investing in ourselves isn't selfish; it's a divine act of love that allows us to love others more fully.

Pray & Ponder Prompts

Pray that the Holy Spirit open your spiritual eyes and mind to perceive anything he is speaking to you as you pray and ponder these questions

  • How do these verses speak to you today
  • What does it mean to be "fearfully and wonderfully made"?
  • How does self-love and self-care relate to REFLECTING God's love?

Guided meditation

Find a quiet place where you won’t be disturbed. Sit or lie down in a comfortable position.

Take a deep breath in, feeling your lungs fill with peace and tranquility. As you exhale, let go of any stress or tension.

Imagine yourself in a serene garden, surrounded by lush greenery and fragrant flowers. In the center of the garden, you see a large, ornate tea kettle, steaming gently. This tea kettle is a symbol of God’s unconditional love, always ready to comfort and nourish.

As you approach the kettle, you notice the rich, aromatic steam rising from its spout. Inhale deeply, letting the soothing fragrance fill your senses. This divine aroma is a reminder of God’s love, always present, always comforting.

Carefully pour a cup of the warm, golden tea. The liquid shimmers with a gentle light. As you bring the cup to your lips, take a slow, deliberate sip. Feel the warmth spreading through your body, calming your mind, and soothing your soul.

With each sip, you are filled with God’s love. This love is a constant source of strength, peace, and joy. Let it fill every part of you, from your head to your toes.

As the warmth of the tea spreads, imagine it overflowing from your heart, like a gentle stream. This love flows out to everyone you encounter, bringing comfort, kindness, and understanding.

Take a few moments to savor the peace and tranquility that this meditation has brought you. As you continue to breathe deeply, let the love of God continue to fill your heart and soul.

When you’re ready, slowly open your eyes, carrying the peace and love you’ve cultivated within you. May this love guide your actions and words throughout the day.

Prayer:

Heavenly Father,

Thank You for Your commandment to love You with all our heart, soul, and mind, and to love our neighbors as ourselves. Empower us to live this truth boldly and with compassion.

Fill us with Your love, so we can radiate Your light into the world. May we see others as You see them, full of potential and worthy of love. Help us to break down barriers and build bridges of understanding and compassion.

We believe in Your power to transform hearts and minds. May Your love flow through us, enabling us to love unconditionally and serve selflessly.

In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.
